Winston Churchill Receives Portrait by Graham Sutherland (1954)
As part of his 1954 birthday celebration,
Winston Churchill receives Graham
Sutherland's portrait at Westminster Hall
in London. "The portrait is a remarkable
example of modern art," says Churchill
with a sarcastic undertone (he had
previously tried to reject the portrait),
which draws a laugh from the crowd. The
original Graham Sutherland Winston
Churchill portrait can be seen in this
video. It was never displayed in public
and Churchill's wife Clementine would
later have it burned.
