Lady in the Lake Trailer
Apple TV's
Lady in the Lake TV
series is based on the 2019 Laura Lippman
novel of the same name, which tells the
story of a fictional Jewish housewife who
is bored with her husband and leaves him
to become an investigative journalist in
downtown Baltimore. The book's story was
inspired by two unrelated deaths in
Baltimore in 1969: the death of a
35-year-old black woman named Shirley
Parker and the murder of an 11-year-old
Jewish girl named Esther Lebowitz. In the
series, Portman's character battles
misogyny as she attempts to explore the
two deaths. The series and book also offer
a commentary on how the two deaths are
treated differently, with the suspicious
death of Parker (renamed Cleo Sherwood),
whose body was found in the fountain of a
lake, being quickly forgotten.
